Chris Jones (P/M) |
One of Chris' first memories was of the Pipe Band of the
Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders playing at Wellington College,
where his parents both taught - he was instantly hooked, but had
to wait a few years before he could start to learn to play the
pipes himself. He started playing the chanter as an 11
year old at Wellington way back in 1980 - though unfortunately,
this was only for a brief 6 months; his tutor, Sgt. Milne of the
Kings Own Scottish Borders (K.O.S.B's), was posted to Germany.
He never lost his desire to play and as a 25 year old teacher at
Loretto School, Musselburgh, was extremely lucky to be given
tuition by his colleague -
Colin Pryde (son of
P.M. Jimmy Pryde
- Royal Scots Grey's / Royal Scots Dragoon Guards). Colin
provided great inspiration and Chris soon bought his bagpipes
from R.T. Shepherd and Son and helped Colin with a number of
Pipe Band tours around Scotland, France and Norway with the
Loretto School Pipes and Drums. Other tuition has been
given to Chris by the legendary P/M John.D.Burgess M.B.E, P/M
Norman Gillies and P/M Brian Donaldson (Scots Guards).
On leaving Loretto in 2002, Chris joined The Mull and Iona
Piping Society (Isle of Mull Pipeband) and played at a number of
events with them until leaving for Norway at the end of 2004.
January 2005 saw Chris playing at the fledgling Bergen Scottish
Society's Burn's Supper. Through a chance meeting at the
Burn's Supper, Chris heard about a Danish Piper - Kirstine
Folmann who lived in Bergen. Independently, they had both
had a desire to set up a pipe band in Bergen, and so, after a
few informal meetings, The Bergen Pipe Band was inaugurated in
September 2005. Chris led the band for 2 1/2 years
until Gregor Campbell was elected the band's first Pipe Major.
Gregor sadly had to leave the band when his job took him back to
Scotland and on his departure, Chris was elected to the postion
of Pipe Major in August 2008. |

Marie Birketvedt (Pipe Sgt.) |
Marie is an architecture student from Os and is the current Pipe
Sergeant in the band. She started playing the pipes when
studying in Orkney for a year. Marie was taught by Arne Flett in
2005/06, before coming back home to Bergen and discovering that
The Bergen Pipe Band had been started by Chris not long
beforehand; she joined in an instant! She has managed to drag
most of her family into the band too, and is marrying Chris
during the Summer of 2010. |

Nina Birketvedt |
Nina is a 16 year old girl from Os. She has played the pipes for
two and a half years. It was her big sister Marie and Chris who
got her in the band. She hopes to develop as a piper. She loves
playing the pipes. She also enjoys the friendships in the band.

Øystein Ottesen Nødtvedt |
Øystein has always had a passion for music and started off
early as a child to play the piano - mostly classical. When he
was 12 years he started taking lessons on the pipeorgan and has
played that since. He has always had a fascination for celtic
music and culture, and that over time has developed in to a
passion as well as playing celtic music, and one of those
instruments is the Great Highland Bagpipe. He started learning
from Chris Jones in the Bergen Pipeband in the late spring of
2009. As well as playing the bagpipes, he also started at the
same time as to play the irish tin whistle and the irish flute.
He is now in the process of also learning the irish Uilleann
pipes! He likes alot of different genres from classical to prog
to metal, but it is celtic music which has sparked his
curiousity the most.

Tony started in the band in 2008. He is a former snare drummer
in buekorps, though found that there is a big difference between
the two types of snare drum, both in sound and technique. Tony
has also written several local history books, the last one about
Nøstet - the same area where Scottish immigrants settled in
Bergen. He has also spreads Scottish culture through his work
and has taught his kindergarden pupils some Scottish dances.
